More new portfolio work for 2013

Labware

I just launched my print store! Check it out!

I’m thrilled to announce that after a great deal of time, planning and work, I’ve launched the first version of my online print store. I’m pleased to be working with Photoshelter, who have been working hard in the photo industry for a very long time to make things better.

My first featured gallery consists of images that I’ve made on the go over the past year. It will be updated regularly, and all photos will be limited to 10 prints in each size run. Once they are gone, they are gone.

Los Angeles, I’m Yours

My collaboration with The Fox is Black (formerly Kitsune Noir), Los Angeles I’m Yours, is going extremely well. I’ve been shooting up a storm the past two weeks and can’t wait to debut the new work! We are in the process of building the website with a team of designers so that it will be ready to go by next month.

I’m so happy to be working with such great people and meeting so many wonderful talented artists and creatives.

One picture for now, then back to editing!

Road Trip Film

Got some stuff back from the lab. I’ve been shooting 35mm black and white on this ridiculous dead stock 1984 manual advance point and shoot that I found in chinatown for 10 bucks.

Is it crappy? Absolutely. Do I like it? Absolutely.

Here are some shots from my recent shoot at Big Bear.

Assisting

I still assist for a lot of photographers as my career continues to grow. Between my own shoots it’s a great way to make ends meet, especially because the photo industry is my only source of income. I take a little bit of pride in the fact that I’ve lived in Los Angeles for over a year and a half now, and never had a secondary job. 🙂

As an assistant I do all sorts of stuff from lugging heavy grip and lighting equipment, to driving production vehicles. I light shots, I sometimes digital tech, and I generally solve problems for the photographer I’m working with. It’s a great way to meet more people in my industry and I try to pick up something new on every shoot I work on. That might be a way of dealing with the subject or client, or it might be something technical like a lighting pattern I haven’t encountered before.

I was inspired by Tim over at http://aphotoassistant.com/ to lay out all the stuff I keep in my kit when going into the studio or on location. Some people tend to overkill it and bring even more than this, but I find it to be generally pretty solid in terms of covering my bases. I’ve had more than one photographer stoked I had something random like my own door stopper. Sometimes that, coupled with not being a total bummer to hang out with can get me hired back.

Here’s a list of stuff that comes in handy:

3 way splitters – You never know when power will be scarce. I carry 2 of these
Gum – Catering can do some damage to your breath. Keep fresh for client chats
Gaff tape (White, Black, Grey) – If you have room for all 3, they are great to have.
Electrical tape – Sometimes fraying cables can pose a serious risk
Gloves – I recently upgraded to Hot Hands by Setwear . They ain’t cheap, but they work great.
SOG brand B62 Leatherman style multi-tool – I prefer this one because it has gear-driven pliers in addition to the usual other stuff. Plus the added bonus of being all black (win)
Superknife with extra blades – Cutting foam core or fools who step out of line
1″ and 2″ blue and white painters/masking tape – a variety of applications, but great for taping the bottom of model’s shoes for the cyc
Tape measure
• Hand sanitizer
• Ibuprofin and Excedrin
• Red and Black Sharpies
• Blue and black rollerball pens
• Micron pen
(not necessary, but I love these pens and for some reason writing with them makes me feel fancy)
Small and Medium A Clamps – Sometimes photographers forget theirs, or run out. You having one on you makes you look awesome
Toof Brush – For keepin’ them chompers cleeean, son.
Small magnetic level
Door stopper – You’d be surprised how many doors try to close themselves and smash your cords
Matches – This might seem odd, but it’s come up. I’d rather have them than not. Plus the nice folks at Milk and Smashbox love free advertising.
Flashlights – I keep one little LED one for digging around in my kit, and another multi-LED one for on set
Travel First Aid Kit – Band aids, etc. Sometimes production drops the ball and you have to be the one to step up as medic
3-prong grounded adaptors – If you get stuck somewhere with janky power, you’ll thank me. I roll with 3 of them.
Extra AA and AAA batteries – You don’t need this many, but bring as many as you feel like you might use. Then bring 2 more.
• Pouch – I have this Klein Tools one left over from an old job doing low voltage wiring. I think I used to keep my phone in it, but now I use it to store my:
Blower – Get dust off the lens, and anything else that is mildly dusty. Many people prefer canned air, but this is sustainable so I rock it
Lens cloth – Most ad shoots have budget for digital tech, and they generally take care of the back, body and lenses. But often, you’ll be the unfortunate soul who has to keep cleaning the salty ocean spray off the lens as the shirtless hunk you’re hired to shoot splashes around.

I don’t have one shown here, but it’s not an awful idea to have your OWN light meter on set. Also not shown here are a couple of other non-essential items that are great in a pinch. I bring a pair of booties to go over my shoes to walk around on the cyc wall or in a house if I’m concerned my shoes might mess up the carpet.

Also, it’s always a good idea to bring a couple of trash bags in case it starts raining and you need to cover the packs. This is especially important at the beach. Things get wet AND sandy, and the rental house will give you the look of disapproval for real if you bring their gear back looking like you were trying to exfoliate it.

Some people also like to include a lint roller, some hairspray and a few different kinds of glue (super, gorilla, etc). I recommend all of these things as well.

I keep all that loot in my messenger-style shoulder bag and take it with me wherever I happen to be that day. Make sure to write your name on anything that you bring on set that you would like to actually come home at the end of the day. People might not actually mean to steal from you, but if they end up with your gear in their pocket, why not make it easier for them to give it back.

What stuff do you keep in your kit that I don’t?

Bear in Heaven

I went to see Sun Airway, Lower Dens and Bear in Heaven at the Troubador the other day and it was a great show. Here are my favorites from the Bear in Heaven set.

Live Music

I’ve been shooting a lot of shows lately.

The Naked and Famous were great this week at Bardot/School Night. Here’s a shot I like:

Here’s a little teaser outtake from a new project I’m working on for a client who makes some pretty top quality footwear.

Tumblr X Logitech Loft Party

I had the good fortune of being invited to attend an exclusive party last night thrown by Tumblr and Logitech at the new Logitech Loft. It’s a penthouse on the 30th floor of the new Watermarke Tower in the South Park area of Downtown LA. The space was gorgeous, and the view was completely insane. Tumblr and Logitech were nice enough to have excellent catering, an open bar, and new Logitech TVs to play with. If you get a chance to attend any events here while Logitech is sharing the wealth, so to speak, I recommend that you do.

Peanut Butter Wolf

Rolled by DanceRight at La Cita tonight to grab a quick couple snaps of Peanutbutter Wolf, one of my favorite DJs. It was a good time as always, but I’m pretty tired from being sick with a throat cold this week.

Here are a few pics.
These DeeJays Don’t Take Requests. Haha PB Wolf and Excel have a little bit of experience. They don’t need any help picking what comes next.

Apartment 3 x Unique LA Pop-up Shop Launch

Last night was the launch party for The new Apartment 3 Unique LA pop-up shop in Culver City. The spot is tucked inside the HD Buttercup space at Helms Bakery Building. It’s super well done, and stocked full of great fashion, accessories and wonderful pieces for the home.
There was an open bar, and a ton of great people to enjoy it. Congratulations to all of the wonderful people who worked so hard to put this on.

Bethanie Jean

I’m starting to do a little bit more model testing to broaden the scope of my work. Here are some selects from a session I did with Bethanie Jean Triplett last friday. Enjoy!

Metasyn – Back to Life

This is a project I’m very proud to say I worked really hard on. I’ve been working on some indie music videos in the past 6 months in the varying degrees of production. I’ve done PA work, Grip/Electric, etc. and it’s been fun.

But last month, I got tapped out of the blue to run the whole art department on a video for the band Metasyn and ended up with credit as Production Designer! So anything that you see in this that looks rad, I had a hand in it.

I built the set with my own two hands from the ground up for the performance shots. I sourced the dead pheasant for the creepy dragging shots. I dressed just about everything you can think of, from the mask to the ash in the breakdown shot. I also ran 4 banks of KINOFLOs during hours and hours of performance. So that flickering you notice when everyone is rocking out? That’s me on the ones, twos threes fours fives sixes, etc… hahah.

It was a ton of work and I was exhausted at the end. But I couldn’t be much happier with the final result.

Locations in and around downtown Los Angeles and at Enjoy Human Studios.

Maggy Barry’s “Wrapped in Beauty” Fashion Show

The Downtown Fashion Walk has been gaining a bit of momentum here in LA over the past few months. After launching in September, this fledgling event had a wobbly start with low attendance and a lack of direction. To be fair, it’s always tough to spearhead a new project, and I applaud the effort. I do everything I can to support my neighborhood from promoting to event coverage. It’s nice to see everyone’s hard work beginning to pay off a bit.

While Fashion Walk is far from brilliant, this month held a few more actual happenings than in months past. The usual map was passed around with the same boutiques doing nothing new, but The Alexandria Hotel kicked it up a notch by hosting a fashion show for Maggy Barry. Admission was open to the public and there were quite a few people on hand to check things out.

The format of the show was something they seem to have borrowed from Box Eight Studios. Instead of traditional runway style, there was a live photo shoot of the collection. So all of the pieces from the Spring/Summer 2010 collection were paraded in front of the camera, and an all-too cliche’ looking “fashion photographer” shot thousands of images. Normally I am very amiable with other photographers and I love to support others in my field. But when you’re a chubby middle aged man wearing a scarf and sunglasses inside WHILE you’re shooting, sagging your cargo pants with your big belly hanging out the front I feel comfortable shaking my head at your silliness. Guy was a bit too over the top for my taste with his Blow Up-esque methodology.

The atmosphere was fun, and I noticed quite a few people dressed in their finest fashion attire happy to be parading around at the show. Lots of fun styling, music and some hard to see visuals. Sushi was going around on trays carried by topless models provided by Naked Catering.

Here are some images from the evening.

Jeff Conger comes to Reno for AIGA speaking event (oh and Hot August Nights)

I had the pleasure of hearing Jeff Conger, hot rod photographer and graphic design professor at Montana State University, speak at the Nevada Museum of Art this Tuesday. What a great time! Good networking at the event, made even better by a delicious classic car themed cake from Josef’s Vienna Bakery. Jeff outlined his experiences as an editorial automotive photographer, and spoke about his career as a professor living and working in Bozeman, Montana. It’s always cool to meet people who are passionate about what they do, and Jeff Conger is one of those people: A true gearhead at heart. Thanks to the loveli Leilani Schweitzer for bringing him to Reno.

Afterwards Jeff, Leilani and I went out for drinks at Chocolate Bar, and had some insightful conversation on the state of the photographic and publishing industries. It was nice to hang out on their new patio. Definitely worth a try. Although I do wish they would quit turning up the bad techno to levels that all but prohibit conversation.

Today I was fortunate enough to be invited out to Miller Speedsports at the Stead airport. Dave Miller is a fantastic craftsman of beautiful custom cars, and was more than happy to host Jeff Conger and myself for a photo shoot. Leilani and Earl Spriggs filmed the latest installment of the Twelve Horses podcast, and interviewed Jeff in the gorgeous garage Miller Speedsports has built. Did some fun car to car shots, and had good conversation with Dave and some of his car owner buddies. Here are some photos, enjoy!
